#CampaignBits: The Appeal of the Stupid? The Budweiser WHAZZUP Campaign.

Deepanshu

In 1999, Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. came up with a certain advertising campaign to resonate with a new, more youthful audience, which has since become immortalized in Pop-Culture.

“It seemed different than anything else. And it seemed to be totally what Bud is about: camaraderie and friendship and what guys do.” - DDB Worldwide (Creators of the Campaign)

The campaign went viral in the truest of sense at a time when internet was still in its nascent stages. What started out as internet parodies, was now featuring in the news, late night talk shows and radio.”Whazzup” soon became a common way of greeting for many people.

Budweiser subsequently released many installments of the same idea:

WAZZZZAAAAbi

We are NOT alone.

... and many more!

The iconic ad went on to be parodied and referenced in fan-favorite Movies and TV Shows such as Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Scary Movie, F.R.I.E.N.D.S., The Simpsons, The Office, and How I Met Your Mother, among many others (videos linked at the end).

WHAZZUP Again

Budweisser Canada, in collaboration with Uber, recreated the 20-year-old classic ad with modern twist for the 2020 Super Bowl. (This is my favourite of the lot!)

The campaign was built around the weird and stupid things that friends do when they are chillin'. It is the relatability with this stupidity that has made this campaign and the recognition of The phrase such a widely recognized phenomenon.
